Alim Smith’s work has always carried the weight of where it comes from. Raised in Delaware, his paintings feel personal, layered, and deliberate — built from inner experience rather than surface-level aesthetics. There’s a quiet confidence in that approach. No shortcuts. No spectacle for spectacle’s sake. Just honest visual language shaped by feeling, memory, and intuition.
That same language eventually found its way into the world of Mac Miller. The artwork tied to Balloonerism originated as a self-portrait Alim created independently. Long before the project reached the public, Mac saw the piece and recognized something in it. He later commissioned the image as the visual foundation for the album.

A floating figure. A balloon shaped like Mac’s head. Suspended somewhere between grounding and release. The image mirrors many of the ideas present in the music itself—introspection, uncertainty, growth, emotional gravity. It doesn’t explain. It doesn’t over-direct. It establishes a mood and invites the viewer in.
That restraint is central to Alim’s practice. His work doesn’t arrive with instructions. It leaves room. It trusts the audience. It values feeling over formula.
Watching an artist move from quietly building in Delaware to contributing to a Grammy-nominated body of work isn’t about a sudden transformation. It’s about continuity. The same intention. The same honesty. The same commitment to making work that means something.

That’s what resonates with us. We’re drawn to artists who treat visuals as part of a larger story—not decoration, not filler, not trend-chasing. Translating Alim’s artwork into tapestry garments is an extension of that story. A way for the work to live beyond the wall. To move through everyday life. To be worn, revisited, and experienced in new contexts.
Not as novelty.
Not as hype.
But as continuation.
This collaboration exists to honor an artist’s vision, respect the legacy of an album that holds real meaning, and create something that feels considered from start to finish.
